28 September 2002:  First XV
Durham & Northumberland Division 1

Ryton  17    Hartlepool  35

Ryton’s disastrous start to the season continued at Hartlepool on Saturday 28/9/02.  Once again after a spirited fight back to secure the interval lead gave way to second half defensive vulnerability that allowed the recently promoted home side to retain their 100% record.

Ryton were 14pts to 3 behind after only 15 mins.  Converted home tries first from a lineout, 5 metres from the Ryton line and then from a line out in their own 22 gave Hartlepool an early advantage.

LES ELLIOTT kicked a penalty goal before Ryton again reduced their deficit when the pack drove forward from a scrum, the backs took up the momentum and DUNCAN SIMPSON ran fully 35 metres to the corner flag for a try.

Ryton continued to improve and pressure produced three penalty goals for LES ELLIOTT giving his side an interval lead 17 pts to 14 pts.

This was short lived as Hartlepool displaying aggressive direct rugby produced 3 early second half tries to secure a comfortable lead.

To their credit, Ryton stuck to their guns and had the last word as the game reached fever pitch in the closing stages and their endeavour was rewarded with a penalty try converted by LES ELLIOTT after a succession of penalties on the home try line.

Another opportunity to open this seasons league account was over and although each games brings a marked improvement, further development and cohesion is required before they rediscover their self respect.
